Akerlof, George A.
(n. 17 jun. 1940, New Haven, Conn., EE.UU.).

Economista estadounidense con estudios en la Universidad de Yale (B.A., 1962) y en el Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Ph.D., 1966). En 1966 se inició como docente en la Universidad de California, Berkeley, y llegó a ser Profesor de economía Goldman en 1980. Las investigaciones de Akerlof con frecuencia recurrieron a otras disciplinas como psicología, antropología y sociología, y desempeñaron un papel importante en el desarrollo de economía conductual. Su estudio señero sobre la información asimétrica en el mercado de los autos usados, demostró cómo los mercados operan defectuosamente cuando los vendedores tienen mayor información que los compradores. En 2001, Akerlof compartió el Premio Nobel de Economía con A. Michael Spence y Joseph E. Stiglitz.
